Philip Murphy Statement on the Passing of Julian Bond

New Start New Jersey Chairman and Co-Founder Philip D. Murphy issued the following statement regarding the passing of former NAACP Chairman and civil rights leader Julian Bond:

"When I heard the news this morning of Julian Bond's passing I didn't believe it.

"This is a devastating and crushing personal loss for Pam and their family, for all of their friends, including Tammy and me, and for our nation. ‎

"I met Julian in 1999 and we were close friends ever since. Notwithstanding all he had accomplished as a civil rights icon, he was no 'lion in winter.'. I owe my long history with the NAACP, on whose board I serve, to my friendship with and respect for Julian.

"Looking at the year we have endured since Ferguson, one could make a forceful argument that we needed Julian Bond now more than ever. It is up to the rest of us to pick up the pieces and march on in his spirit, to relentlessly find the common ground, to strive to make our nation all that it can be.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Pam as we salute our dear friend and hero, Julian Bond."
